THE NFU’s new chief adviser for horticulture and potatoes Hayley Campbell-Gibbons is heading to Yorkshire this month on a fact-finding tour.

Home to a variety of horticultural producers plus a large number of potato growers, Hayley is keen to meet as many people as possible and find out first-hand the issues that are affecting them.

She will visit regional commodity board chairman Adam Sykes on his family farm on the outskirts of Tadcaster.

The farm business includes livestock as well as arable production of cereals, oilseed rape, sugar beet and, of course, potatoes. Some of the potatoes are produced on contract for McCain’s and the business also specialises in the storage and chitting of seed potatoes for other growers.

Hayley’s visit, due to take place on Wednesday June 1, will start with an open forum for growers and will finish with a farm walk.

“This is a really useful opportunity to meet our new chief adviser and highlight the issues we are facing,” said Adam. “Problems associated with the very dry spring are bound to come up and I’m hoping Hayley will be able to update us on the recent meeting between NFU President Peter Kendall, Secretary of State Caroline Spelman and other government agencies to discuss the impact of the current weather conditions on the agricultural sector.”

The meeting takes place at 2.30pm at North Milford Grange, Tadcaster and all NFU members are welcome to attend. For more details contact Rachel Webster on 01904 451550 or email rachel.webster@nfu.org.uk
